OCR: DASYATIDAE Stingrays Of the more than 100 species of stingrays known worldwide only eight are found in the Caribbean. Stingrays, as the name implies, are members the cartilaginous fish- who can defend themselves with their spines. They live on the ocean bottom and frequently cam- ouflage themselves by burying their bodies in sand leaving only their eyes protruding. Unlike the large planktivorous manta rays now almost vanished from the Caribbean, stingrays are carnivo- rous 1OF3
